Class 17

The biggest change is that the door interiors are not messy and all the doors are closed more than before so you can see them inside the room. Here is the full video:

Changes I would like to make:

  • Re-render doors 3 and 6 (hinge is not touching the frame and is noticeable with these doors)

  • Make final decisions about which backgrounds work and which don't. Start replacing and double checking placement.

  • Re-render the shadow for door 2 (the beginning is missing)

  • Push door 3 back a little. Pull door 5 up a little.

  • Color Grading + Grain

  • Update door model so the indent is not as deep (really low priority)

I decided to take away the camera projection for the interior of the doors. It was causing too much warping.

I cleaned up door 1 a little because I felt like the water bottle being cut off at the bottom was one of the reasons why it wasn't working. I realized when I was almost done that the whole left side is cut off so it wouldn't really make a difference. I also rotated the image so that the line aren't diagonal. When I brought it back into Nuke to be used as a door interior, I scaled it up so that you can't see the left side at all and the horizon lines match up. I think it works better now.

I went through all my green screen footage and locked down frame ranges, cleaned up some alphas, and adjusted the color corrections. I used a hue correct to get rid of the stubborn de spill on the skin, but it caused issues on some clothing, so I went black and cleaned that up with some masks.

The clothes seem to be really sensitive to the hue correct. I wasn't able to get all the green out before it started going pink.

These are my final node graphs. From here on out, I am just plugging things in to render:

I am in the process of rendering out all doors and shadows. I got rid of the projection for the interior of the door in the shots with just one door. It didn't add any parallax and caused more clean up to be needed in the final comp. I haven't decided if it will be left out of the shots (3 and 5) where the camera moves in a circle. You may be able to see more parallax with that motion so I will test it with and without the projection.

I am also debating on the color grading of the video. I want it to feel nostalgic, but I also like the natural color that came from the recording. I think I'm going to lower the saturation and contrast of the beginning of the video up until the tone changes. I will also add a slight grain to that footage and make it warmer in color. Then when the tone changes, I will add back some contrast and saturation, get rid of the grain, and make it cooler in color. This, hopefully, will symbolize how the positive memories differed from reality.
